Product Description
A sensation across Europe-millions of copies sold A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance forty years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden . . . and about her octogenarian uncle, determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder. It's about Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently at the wrong end of a libel case, hired to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance . . . and about Lisbeth Salander, a twenty-four-year-old pierced and tattooed genius hacker possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age-and a terrifying capacity for ruthlessness to go with it-who assists Blomkvist with the investigation. This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Swedish industrialism-and an unexpected connection between themselves. It's a contagiously exciting, stunningly intelligent novel about society at its most hidden, and about the intimate lives of a brilliantly realized cast of characters, all of them forced to face the darker aspects of their world and of their own lives.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, September 2008: Once you start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there's no turning back. This debut thriller--the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson--is a serious page-turner rivaling the best of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo. --Dave Callanan

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe I ignored this for so long!   July 31, 2010

For some reason, I kept passing over this book. Then, my daughter recommended I read it. I downloaded it to my Kindle, started reading, and couldn't put it down until I finished. Somewhere in the middle of it, I stopped long enough to download the next two books in the series. I'm now in the middle of the third book and am already upset that this is the last one.

2 out of 5 stars does not live to the hype   July 31, 2010
it starts out as a good story but seems to peak prematurely. not very well written.

3 out of 5 stars Don't get what all the fuss is about, mildly enjoyable read   July 31, 2010

I jumped on this wagon because I figured it wasn't a coincidence that this book is currently the hottest book on the planet and the American movie version has every A-list actress from Keira Knightley to Kristen Steward vying for the title role. Not to say that it's a bad book, but I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about. The mystery is ok I guess but kind of letdown when it's finally solved. Salander and Blomkvist are not the most likeable protagonists but my main issue was the throwing around of so many names and not really developing any of the those characters. The pace of the book is relatively slow for a murder mystery and there are a lot of pages where nothing is really happening. I do, however, say the book is "ok" because it kept me reading until the end to find out the mystery. Decent summer read but I've read better.

5 out of 5 stars Larsson, great writer   July 30, 2010

No wonder you see everyone reading this series. It's in simple language and the characters are so intresting. I hung on every word and really liked his style. Hated it to end. Now on to the next book.

5 out of 5 stars an all-nighter   July 30, 2010

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Definitely a book you won't put down until the end - and then you'll find the clever segue to the next volume in the trilogy - so well written and with such surprising (but logical if you think about it) twists the reader is carried on a cloud in a world in Sweden (and that is new, too) that makes the most of technology, high risks, romance, and all of those other human emotions that build a great story. Run, don't walk, to your first volume, but be sure the next two are close at hand, lest you feel incomplete when the first is done. Don't stop to sleep, you won't need it!
