5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book About Foundation of US Government   July 21, 2010

This is a must read for anyone interested in the origin of the American government. Could the Founding Fathers create a government "By the People" today? What was the key element they discovered in their colonial society that led them to create a republic based on government by the people with elected representatives and limited federal power? Why was the federal branch limited? Why was individual liberty so valued? What unified the colonists? What are the 28 Principles on which they agreed? What are natural laws and do they apply today? This book answers these questions and so much more. Skousen fills in the historical facts our textbooks leave out. He uses primary resources. This is a book for today although written in the 1980s. This really is the first book you should read if you want to know the truth about what the Founders were reading, writing and discussing. This edition includes the US Consitution and Amendments. In the preface Skousen adds some biographical information. The book also includes questions you might ask political candidates. It is not difficult to read and is well organized. Read this with your children and discuss what it means to be an American. Can we maintain the gift given to us by the Founding Fathers?

3 out of 5 stars Hard for me to get into.   July 20, 2010

While the content of the book is not an issue, the writing style seems to have thrown me. My mind simply refused to wrap itself around this book. It is likely a very good read for many others out there, but for myself it was a wasted purchase. At least for now. I am going to give it another go sometime in the next couple months to see if it will read better then.
One note for those that are not religious. You won't like the religious spin in this book. It is very blatant and in your face throughout many of the chapters. If you can get past that particular facet of the book, you may actually enjoy the content.

5 out of 5 stars Best history less I ever had   July 20, 2010

The information in this book gave more history than I have received in my entire 26 years of life. I always had a feeling that the founders had to be good men, not the bad guys I was told about, and I was surprised to find just how wonderful they were. The amazing principles this country was founded on were never taught to me before, and I am sad that I never knew about them. But now that I do, I recommend this book to everyone I meet so that they too can grow a new appreciation for this wonderful country.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to "read & heed"!   July 16, 2010

This book explores the philosophies and ideas behind our Constitution as it was conceptualized and written by the founding fathers. Cleon Skousen pulls his interpretations & discussions of the founding principles from the original writings of a number of the most influential framers of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, and cites a full bibliography of original sources for further reference. The bonus is the actual Constitution included in the back of the book. This is a very well-written, "reader-friendly" book that I didn't find the least bit dull or hard to digest. In fact, it's given me a new appreciation for history, and the innovative ideas that went into the creation of the Constitution...how the founders overcame almost impossible odds to give us a form of freedom in government that was a completely new idea. On the down side, it's a wake up call to how far we have, as a country, allowed those who govern us to stray from the Constitution's original intent and subvert our country's foundational law to suit various political agendas. Oddly enough, it also almost reads as a prophecy...it's eery how clearly the founders warned about so many of the things that are currently happening. Our country seems to be following the very path they foresaw would happen f we allowed our Constitution to be ignored and bent to whatever shape was politically expedient. The Constitution's wisdom, it seems, is that it takes human nature into account, and attempts to protect us from being governed by the worst elements in that nature, which unfortunately, hasn't changed much since the 1700's. This book should be on a required "read & heed" list for educators, students and particularly for Congressional representatives.
