Not too hard, but cake is uneven July 22, 2010 NC The pan itself is pretty well made, it fits together nicely but to make the pans fit together, one side is slightly smaller than the other, even after the cake was iced this was still somewhat noticable to me but no one else seemed to notice.
This pan wasn't too hard to use, just fill the one side with cakemix from a full box then carefully put the top on and tie together with cooking twine (I found around the neck and back end of the duck works well). You do have to make sure to coat the pan well and using the Wilton cake release (but not too much, it will cause the cake to break apart) helps get the duck out easily. I had read some other reviews that said pound cake was necessary, I made this twice with a regular butter flavored cake mix and it came out fine.
For anyone who is wondering (mainly if you've never done something like this before), you will definately need cooking twine and a cookie sheet for this cake, Wilton cake release is nice to have, though you can probably use something else if you are sure the cake will come out. A sharp knife is nice to have to cut the bottom so it is even and a smaller sharp knife to cut the pieces that stick off around the edges also helps. Plan on putting icing underneath to keep it steady. If you are following the directions in the box you will need various cake decorating supplies (bags, tips, gel food coloring) and more icing is necessary for decorating a cake wiht the icing bags than just coating it and using a knife to spread the icing out, having about 3 jars of premade icing will help ensure you don't run out. Also, I found it easier to use M&M's or skittles for eyes instead of making a tiny amount of dark colored icing and using it for the eyes.
Very Cute February 10, 2010 Cindy Auler (Stone Bluff, OK) My daughter asked for this for Christmas, and soon made a darling cake from it. She's very pleased, as were we.
Couldn't get it to work correctly.. October 14, 2009 AL53 I bought this cake pan for a baby shower - luckily I gave myself time to try it out beforehand! I tried a couple of different brands of box mix - the first time I used one box, which definitely did not have the required amount to fill the pan. The second time I used a different brand and made two boxes and used the 5.5 cups and filled until overflowing (per the instructions). Even when I used the required amount on the second time - it was not enough to fill out the entire pan. The 3d duck was there, but very lopsided. I am just going to use one half of the pan, and put the duck on a sheet cake, as the details do fill out nicely on the bottom half of the pan.
I have looked up info on trying to get this pan to work and most people have recommended pound cake - but I don't really want pound cake for the shower!
cute but hard to use July 1, 2009 C. LEWIS (GA) This pan made the cutest duck in a pond cake for my great nephew's 1st b-day.
But it took a lot of work to get it to bake out fully so both sides looked good.
It was adorable! June 3, 2009 S. Johnson I purchased this mold for my daughter's baby shower. I was worried the cake might stick to the pan, but it came out perfectly. My only suggestion would be that Wilton provide clamps or something to secure the mold. Directions said to secure with kitchen string or wire, which I did not have so I had to buy a big spool of kitchen string (which I doubt I will use again) to secure the mold. This was also a bit awkward to tie, and required two people to ensure the string was tight enough.
